De shake muziek van de week was Black Magician, onderdeel N30 van de ‘Oriental Suite – The Complete Orchestral Music 1923-1924’ van Gurdjieff-De Hartmann.
‘Gurdjieff de Magiër’ … hoe zit dat met die magie? Bij Gurdjieff is de figuur van ‘De Magiër’ een telkens terugkerend thema – lees onderstaande zeer verhelderende toelichting van Sophia Wellbeloved (Gurdjieff: The Key Concepts, 2013):
Magic is the ability to do. A magician is a person who can ‘do’; ordinary men cannot ‘do’ , with them things happen.Magicians are people who understand the laws of nature and know how to use them, to transform substances and to oppose mechanical influences. Christ was a magician, a man who had this knowledge. White magic uses knowledge for good, and black magic for its own selfish ends. Black magic does not necessarily imply evil. Black magicians can be altruistic. However, their identifying trait is that without acquainting people with what they are doing, they use people for their own aims, either through inducing faith and infatuation or through fear.
A black magician will at least have attended a ‘school’. More dangerous are ‘occult’ and ‘Theosophical groups’ whose work on themselves is an illusion. The definition of a black magician raises questions about Gurdjieff’s demand for unswerving obedience to group teachers. If the pupil must obey, even if he does not understand the teacher’s aim, how can he discriminate between a true teacher and a black magician?
Op het blog van 7 november, Gurdjieffs movements, aandacht, aandacht, aandacht…, stond een video van het Mystic Music Festival in de Turkse stad Konya met een uitvoering van The Great Prayer. Dat smaakte naar meer…
Verder zoekend kwam ik onderstaande video tegen, ook van The Great Prayer, deze keer met piano begeleiding. Maar het gaat mij vooral om de heel intense sfeer die het ademt, met die combinatie van ingetogen beweging en stille meditatie – het Grote Gebed waardig:

Fantastisch, hoe hier het accent wordt gelegd op het innerlijk proces, en niet op de ‘demonstratie’ – waar het bijna altijd over gaat.
Hoe je ook over Gudjieff denkt, hij laat zich moeilijk uit de geschiedenis drukken – en we mogen hem wel dankbaar zijn…
